Manual Handling Training
Gone are the days when nurses would man-handle heavy clients using their own body strength moving them from place to place. On any one shift it was estimated that nurses were manual lifting on average 1.8 tonnes, more than the construction industry. There are a lot of older nurses now paying for those past practices with ongoing bad backs.
No Lift Policy
Fortunately times have changed with the introduction of the ‘No Lift Policy’. This dictates that ‘A person must not be manually lifted except in emergency or life-threatening circumstances’.
To help you with client transfer and mobility there are lots of different manual handling aids and techniques you will need to learn and use to keep you and your client safe.
Reducing your risk
Manual handling is still the most common cause of injuries for employees working in aged care facilities, accounting for 58 per cent of all injuries.
When undertaking your Certificate 3 in Aged Care it’s important you ask what type of manual handling practical training is on offer by your training provider.
Some organisations may issue you with a ‘Manual Handling Certificate’ gained through an online course with no practical experience offered or required. Even if you were to sit through a whole day of online instruction, this will NOT prepare you adequately to safely assist clients or look after yourself.
No practical training – no vocational placement
Industry concern about poor student preparation is growing with many aged care facilities now demanding confirmation from training providers that their students have been provided with hands-on practical training. You should check first with the facilities where you intend to do your vocational placement whether your ‘Manual Handling Certificate’ will suffice. You may find yourself having to undertake another course at your additional expense in practical manual handling prior to starting your vocational placement.
All Care Training – playing it safe
All Care Training is owned and operated by nurses who trained and worked in those days when lifting hoists weren’t around. Knowing firsthand the damage that can be done motivates us to provide very practical hands-on manual handling training and instruction that focuses on keeping you and your clients safe. Our Certificate 3 Aged Care courses include two day workshops providing students with the opportunity to gain skills practicing on a variety of commonly used equipment. This includes practice on equipment at Eden Rehabilitation Centre Cooroy, an industry leader in the use of safe manual handling techniques.
